The National Company for Industry and Mining (SNIM) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with ArcelorMittal, in order to evaluate the opportunity to jointly develop a plant for the production of iron pellets and another for the production of reduced iron (DRI) in Mauritania, using ores produced by SNIM.
Under this agreement, a preliminary feasibility study will be launched, for six months, with the aim of actually assessing the feasibility of the potential project, which would benefit from Mauritania’s renewable energy potential and the prospects for green hydrogen production.
Metal production using green hydrogen is an important step in the steel industry’s transition towards a “zero carbon” goal and will contribute to the economic development of the region.
SNIM is the second largest iron ore producer in Africa and is a Mauritanian mineral company, while ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer, a European company headquartered in Luxembourg.
