North China’s steelmaking centre orders measures to cut air pollution

According to Bloomberg News, a statement on the local government website said a so-called ” emergency response level two ” is when Tangshan City, 150 kilometres (93 miles) east of Beijing, expects moderate and severe air pollution.

The statement added that industrial producers must follow relevant guidelines to reduce emissions. Companies with an “A” classification, subject to environmental performance reviews, can decide to reduce emissions, and those on the “White List” for supervision are not obligated to reduce production. The statement did not identify any companies.

The CPC Central Committee kicked off a three-day plenary session yesterday, and the annual session of the country’s top legislature begins early next month. Tangshan city authorities also asked children and the elderly to stay indoors. The government did not specify when the procedures would end.

On the other hand, official data showed that China’s non-ferrous metals industry recorded a steady production and foreign trade expansion in 2022.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the sector’s industrial-added value rose 5.2 per cent year-on-year, 1.6 percentage points higher than the average level of all industries.

Last year, the production of the ten common types of non-ferrous metals reached 67.74 million tonnes, an increase of 4.3 per cent over 2021, according to the data.

This includes the top ten non-ferrous metals: copper, aluminium, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium and titanium.

In 2022, the sector’s total import and export volume reached $327.3 billion, an increase of 20.2 per cent year on year.

In light of the increasing momentum of China’s economic recovery after the Corona pandemic, senior officials pledged to ensure that goals related to the economy and social development are achieved this year.

China’s top leaders and government officials are scheduled to meet next March during the annual National People’s Congress, where the official economic will announce the targets for the year and then formally endorse them.
