In March of this year, US steel imports increased to 2.61 million tonnes, or 14.2%, compared to February 2023, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
In March, the finished steel products import volume amounted to 1.91 million tonnes, an increase of 9% compared to February 2023.
From January to March 2023, US steel imports decreased by 11.5% compared to the same period in 2022 to reach 7.51 million tonnes, and the finished steel products imports reached 5.66 million tonnes, a decrease of 14.5% year on year.
In the first quarter of 2023, the principal sources of steel imports to the United States were Canada, Mexico and South Korea, with a volume of 1.79 million tonnes, 1.27 million tonnes and 1.2 million tonnes, respectively.
In 2022, US steel imports decreased by 2% compared to 2021 to reach 31.46 million tonnes, and finished steel products imports decreased by 10.9% to hit 22.76 million tonnes.
According to Worldsteel, in 2022, the United States was among the top ten steel-producing countries in the world, with a production of 80.7 million tonnes.
In March 2023, US steel production decreased by 2.1% compared to the same month in 2022, attaining 6.7 million tonnes.
