Last Monday, the 17th Arab Steel Summit was held in Doha, Qatar, organized by the Arab Iron and Steel Union in cooperation with Qatar Steel Company under the patronage of His Excellency Eng. Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs – State of Qatar. It is the largest and most important event for steel manufacturers in the Arab world under the slogan “The Future of the Iron and Steel Industry in Arab Countries” with the participation of more than 550 participants from major Arab companies, senior economists, businessmen and fourteen Arab Embassies, which is of particular importance in light of the economic and geopolitical changes witnessed by the world and their significant impact on the iron and steel industry.

The conference began with a welcoming speech by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Iron and Steel Union, Mr. Awaad Al-Khalidi, who called for rapprochement and integration, benefiting from Arab experiences and expertise, and looking forward to a bright future for the Arab and global steel industry, so that the union’s efforts are directed towards bridging the gap between steel manufacturers in Arab and global countries.

His Excellency Eng. Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, called for strengthening the position of the Arab iron and steel industry on the global map

His Excellency Eng. Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, called for strengthening the position of the Arab iron and steel industry on the global map, and creating the appropriate regulatory and investment conditions to stimulate its growth and enable it to compete at various levels.

His Excellency pointed to the major challenges facing the steel industry in the Arab world, especially the geopolitical fluctuations and crises that have a significant impact on the world’s economies and thus on the growth and development of this industry.

He said: “This year has witnessed a strong recovery in demand for steel across the region, driven by massive infrastructure projects and a growing real estate market. Despite this, Arab countries produce about 40 million tons of steel annually out of a total global production of nearly two billion tons. This makes strengthening our position on the global map an important challenge that requires joint efforts to stimulate the growth of our industry and enable it to compete at various levels.” His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs stressed the need to align solutions to these challenges with a balance between economic, social and environmental goals, especially with regard to reducing the carbon footprint, which is the cornerstone of all sustainability strategies in the world.

He said: “The Arab steel industry must pay special attention to investing in advanced technologies and promoting a culture of innovation, because the future will belong to those who are able to invest in research and development and artificial intelligence mechanisms.”

Dr. Kamel Djoudi calls for building bridges of cooperation between scientific research and the Arab steel industry

The Secretary-General of the Arab Iron and Steel Union, Dr. Kamel Djoudi, said in his opening speech, “The future of the iron and steel industry is closely linked to sustainability and innovation, as modern technologies and scientific research play a pivotal role in developing this industry.”

He referred in his speech to sustainability, reducing the environmental impact of this industry, and using new production techniques to reach what is called “green steel,” especially in light of commitment to environmental standards and legislation set by global systems, as well as innovation and finding scientific and applied solutions that will make this industry more efficient.

He said that this is what the Arab Iron and Steel Union worked on by organizing for the first time the competition for the best three Arab scientific researches in iron and steel for the year 2024, which witnessed the competition of about 30 Arab scientific researches in various disciplines from eight Arab countries.

He also hoped that this competition would be a first step towards building bridges of cooperation between scientific research, which is the basis of development, and the industrial sector, and supporting this initiative in 2025, God willing.

During the opening ceremony, the President of the Arab Iron and Steel Union presented Appreciation Award for His Excellency Eng. Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs.
