The Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed that Algeria will be able to self-sufficiency in iron ore by 2025 thanks to the development of the iron mine in Gara Djebilet in Tindouf province.
Algeria intends to reach 12 million tpy of iron ore production by the mentioned year, fully covering the requirements of local steelmakers, first of all Tosyali Algerie, Algerian Qatari Steel and El Hadjar.
According to preliminary estimates, this project will save the country $ 2 billion annually upon the complete cessation of imports, with the possibility of exporting crude later.
In addition, this project can provide 3 thousand job opportunities, provided that 1000 permanent jobs are provided as it enters the production stage.
