Chairman of the National Committee: Iron and steel is a strategic sector and the backbone of development in Saudi Arabia

The National Committee for the steel industry in the Federation of Saudi Chambers has joined the Arab Iron and Steel Union, the largest Arab gathering of iron producers in Algeria; this enhances the Kingdom’s place and position in the Arab world in the iron industry.

The Chairman of the National Committee for the steel industry in the Federation of Saudi Chambers, Raed Al-Ajaji, said that “iron and steel” represents one of the most important strategic economic sectors and is the backbone of the construction and development process in the Kingdom, and is an essential element in the discussions and agenda of the G20 summit meetings. According to the Saudi Press Agency “SPA”.

Al-Ajaji added that joining the Arab Iron and Steel Union would enable countries to access the Arab database related to steel industry, relevant reports, studies, and related statistics, in addition to the influence on the performance and trends of the Arab steel industry, and the participation in market development programs and initiatives. As well as communicating with experts, specialists and giants of the steel industry at the level of the Arab world, and joining work teams and committees of experts in the field, benefiting from training opportunities in the Union’s projects and acquiring high knowledge in the steel industry.

Al-Ajaji noted that the Arab Iron and Steel Union, headquartered in Algeria, is among the bodies approved by the League of Arab States, and works to achieve Arab integration in the field of steel and iron industry and its development. The Union includes 98 steel companies in the Arab world, and its board of directors consists of 24 companies from the largest Arab iron and steel producing companies representing 13 Arab countries, including the Kingdom.

Al-Ajaji affirmed the support of the National Iron Industry Committee for the efforts and activities of the Arab Iron and Steel Union to achieve Arab economic integration and to develop and evolve the steel industry in the Arab world and enhance its competitiveness against foreign counterparts and reach the world.

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce pointed out that the National Committee for the steel industry obtained membership in the International Iron and Steel Organization based in Belgium in 2019. At a time when the iron and steel industry has witnessed remarkable growth during the past years in the Kingdom, supported by economic growth and an increase in the government investments in the infrastructure and urban projects, as well as the high demand locally and globally.

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce stressed that this industry has become an important hub for many manufacturing industries and plays an essential role in the development wheel, which doubles the importance of the membership of the National Iron Industry Committee in regional and international organizations, and multiplies hopes for a brighter future for this strategic national industry.
