Morocco finalises safeguard case in HR flat products, leaves 25% duty in force
The local steel industry of hot-rolled coils and plates in Morocco witnessed damages from the influx of foreign products.
Therefore, 25% of definitive safeguard duties were levied for three years, of which 1% is to be reduced each year.
Yet, the measures encountered disagreement from the local downstream industries as Morocco is not self-reliant in hot-rolled flat steel products and requires importation of some grades and specifications to feed industrial sector. Morocco imported 108,727 tonnes of hot-rolled flat steel products under HS code 7208 in 2019, which was practically steady year-on-year (+0.8%), according to the International Trade Centre data.
Egypt is among the keys trade partners for the country in flat steel supplies.
