A report by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies highlighted the importance of economic corridors in connecting African markets and boosting trade and investment, citing the Trans-Saharan optical fiber project which includes Algeria, Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Mali, and Mauritania.
The digital link between Algeria and Niger became operational on October 6, with an initial capacity of 100 Gbps. In parallel, Algeria approved the African Development Bank's financing for the section extending from El Menea to Tamanrasset within the Southward railway project, while preparations continue for the topographical survey of the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline route within Niger.
The study places these projects within a broader trend of developing corridors that link transport, energy, communications, and logistics services, contributing to reduced trade costs and improved connectivity between production centers and markets.
. The study estimates Africa's annual infrastructure needs at approximately $130 to $170 billion.
