The British government has announced it is developing a plan to purchase Speciality Steel UK, a company that previously supplied the automotive, aerospace, and defense industries, which entered liquidation in August 2025. Prior to entering liquidation, the company was part of Liberty Steel.
The move came after a private sector offer to buy the company failed, prompting London to explore the option of transferring its assets into public ownership.
British Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the government does not interfere in private companies lightly, but it cannot stand idly by while the future of the company and over 1,300 jobs is being determined automatically.
The government did not disclose the potential cost of nationalization, emphasizing that the process will be subject to due diligence and funded from existing budgets. The potential acquisition step is part of a broader trend by the British government to enhance domestic capabilities in the steel industry and protect economically and strategically important supply chains.
The British Steel Strategy stipulates that the government is funding an insolvency service to manage the sale of Speciality Steel's sites, while working with interested parties to explore the future of the facilities in line with the country's industrial strategy objectives.
• Speciality Steel UK is one of the most important strategic companies in the UK steel industry sector, and the third-largest steel producer in the country.
