Oman Cement Company and Jindal Steel Oman have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to supply and utilize approximately one million tons of steel slag as an alternative raw material in clinker production, a step aimed at enhancing the utilization of industrial waste and reducing the consumption of natural resources.

The agreement was signed by Jiang Tao, Acting CEO of Oman Cement Company, and Harsha Shetty, CEO of Jindal Steel Oman. Oman Cement belongs to Huaxin Group.

The two companies explained that the cooperation aims to reduce reliance on primary raw materials and enhance the optimal use of by-products from the steel industry, thereby supporting resource efficiency and promoting sustainable industrial practices.

Under the agreement, steel slag will be used in the clinker manufacturing process as a substitute for some raw materials, not as a cementitious additive to the final product. This approach reflects the opportunities for integration between the steel and cement industries, by transforming a by-product of the metal industry into a resource that can be utilized in the construction materials industry.
