The U.S. Department of Commerce has imposed a final countervailing duty of 73.33% on imports of carbon and alloy steel wire rods from Algeria, following an investigation into government subsidies provided to Algerian producers.
The department explained that the duty rate was calculated based on available facts with the application of adverse facts, as it was not possible to complete the verification of the information provided during the investigation.
The United States initiated the investigation in April 2026 based on a complaint filed by five American companies.
The decision is based on Algeria's status under the U.S. Countervailing Duty Law, as the United States considers Algeria a country not covered by the Subsidies Agreement. Therefore, a separate determination by the U.S. International Trade Commission was not required to prove material injury before issuing the duty order.
This move is part of a series of U.S. trade actions against Algerian steel products. In March 2026, Washington imposed a final countervailing duty of 72.94% on Algerian rebar, with related anti-dumping investigations ongoing.
