The European Commission announced on Monday that the European Union’s response to Donald Trump’s tariffs has been suspended until July 14 to allow time for negotiations with the US president.
Washington and Brussels have been locked in a trade standoff for weeks over tariffs and retaliation, after Trump launched a trade war that has not spared America’s close partners.
The 27 EU member states approved their first measures on Wednesday, imposing retaliatory tariffs on US goods such as motorcycles, soybeans, and poultry. These tough tariffs were in response to tariffs imposed by Washington on steel and aluminum imports.
However, hours later, Trump announced the suspension of some tariffs for 90 days. The bloc acquiesced to this decision to negotiate with the US administration, without announcing a specific period for the suspension of its retaliatory tariffs.
European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is scheduled to travel to Washington on Monday to discuss the issue with US officials.
