Customs data showed that Japan’s steel scrap exports totaled 513,180 mt in August 2025, up 4.4% compared to 491,652 mt in the same month last year.
In the January–August period of this year, Japan’s steel scrap exports increased to 4.95 million mt, marking a 16.2% year-on-year rise.
Vietnam ranked as the top importer of Japanese steel scrap with 2.16 million mt, up 30.8% from the same period in 2024. Bangladesh followed with 835,837 mt (up 143.3%), while South Korea came third with 826,225 mt, recording a decline of 26.1%.
Meanwhile, Taiwan imported 303,290 mt of Japanese scrap during the same period, down significantly from 432,393 mt last year.
