EU new passenger car registrations down 23.7 per cent in 2020

According to the latest figures issued by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), in December last year, the new car registrations totalled 1.03 million units in the European Union, which led to a decrease of 3.3% compared to 1.06 million units in December 2019.

9.9 million units were registered in 2020, almost three million less compared to 2019, due to Coronavirus pandemic. Measures, including lockdowns and other restrictions, were taken throughout the year, having a major impact on car sales across the European Union.

Over the entire year, new passenger vehicle registrations in the European Union decreased by 23.7 per cent year on year. Registrations decreased in Spain (-32.3%), Italy (-27.9%), France (-25.5%) and Germany (-19.1%) compared to 2019.
