The Council of Arab Economic Unity held its twelfth special session, chaired by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the current chair of the session, and in the presence of Ambassador Muhammad al-Rabi`, the current Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Economic Unity, the permanent representatives of the Council’s member states, representatives of the Ministry of International Cooperation, and the representatives of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the League of Arab States.

This session was held in implementation of the Council’s Resolution No. 1849 in its 110th regular session in December 2020, to choose a new Secretary General of the Council. The candidate of the Republic of Mauritania, Mr. Mohammadi Ahmed Al-Ny, was unanimously elected to be Secretary General of the Council for a period of five years to succeed Ambassador Mohamed Al-Rabie. It is worth noting that the Council of Arab Economic Unity was established as a specialized Arab regional organization in 1964 in accordance with Article 3 of the Arab Economic Unity Agreement, with the aim of organizing and consolidating economic relations between Arab countries on the basis of the natural and historical ties existing between them and achieving the best conditions for the prosperity of their economy and the development of their wealth. 

In the context of joint Arab action, the importance of the path of establishing a complete economic unity among Arab countries, with the aim of creating economic integration between Arab countries that enables them to face regional and international challenges and economic blocs on the global arena, and the tasks and powers of the Council were defined upon its establishment in accordance with this agreement in setting definitions, regulations and legislation Which aims to create a unified Arab customs area.

The Council is currently composed of 7 member states (Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Mauritania, and Somalia), noting that the permanent headquarters of the Council of Arab Economic Unity is in Cairo, and Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation, occupies the position of the permanent representative of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Unity Council.
