The Economic Committee of the Arab Iron and Steel Union held its eleventh meeting on 8–9 September 2025 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Cairo, with the participation of representatives from a number of member companies of the Union.
At the beginning of the meeting, a procedural session was convened for elections, during which Mr. George Matta, Head of the Marketing Sector at Ezz Steel, was elected Chairman of the Economic Committee for the 2025–2029 term.
The sessions continued with discussions on a number of issues and files related to global economic changes and their direct impacts on the steel industry in Arab countries.
The meeting also reviewed developments in global markets and their repercussions on the iron and steel sector, in light of the current challenges facing the industry, as well as the major economic transformations taking place in the Arab region amid geopolitical fluctuations and volatility in energy and raw material prices.
In addition, the meeting reviewed the status of the steel industry in various Arab regions, noting that the Gulf countries and North Africa continue to play a pivotal role in production and demand, driven by infrastructure projects, while the Eastern Mediterranean countries represent a promising market in the medium term, with expectations of increased demand as a result of reconstruction plans.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was decided to hold the twelfth meeting of the Economic Committee in the city of Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in April 2026, at the invitation of the Saudi Iron and Steel Company (Hadeed).
